We've just registered lots of users on our 2100. During the process
of doing this we began to get messages from our in-house-written
procedures when it was about a third of the way through:
chown: user: Too many users
The files were not being correctly owned by the group. We investigated
and it appeared that the quota files may have busted, so we did a
quotacheck and all seemed to be o.k. for a (short) while.
However, the problem reappeared when doing a chown, but again a quotacheck
fixed the problem.
Nevertheless, the overall picture doesn't seem to good. We're still
having problems with chowns, mkdirs and certain other commands which
may attempt to adjust a quota it seems. Pine is also objecting on
startup that it doesn't have access to the pine directory. We've
logged a call to Digital, but there's no response yet. I'm working
round the problem by turning quotas off for the time being.
Has any one else seen anything like this or know what the problem is?
Does "Too many users" really mean that or are there too many
directories or quota entries?
We're running DEC OSF/1 3.0 (Rev 347) and ufs with 7 file systems with
quotas normally enabled.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
Ray
