I forgot to mention that I implemented one of the suggestions to reduce
UBCMAXPERCENT to 50 (instead of the default 100), and the system
performance with FDDI transfers improved tremendously, and has become
more predictable and consistent (a nice thing to have when controlling
real time hardware). Looking again at vmstat and iostat, I see that I
now have much more free memory than before. However, the first rcp or
ftp that I run over the FDDI reduces that amount quite a bit. I'm
getting the impression that the FDDI file transfer grabs (or causes the
UBC to grab) a hunk of memory and it just won't let go. Fortunately,
with the MAXPERCENT set to 50, it still leaves enough for other system
operations.
So does anyone know what is the safest minimum to set it to?
Also, I changed the UBC parameters in the params.c files in all the /sys
directories that I found because I don't remember the syntax for the
config file (/sys/conf/MACHINENAME). Can anyone show me what it is?
I won't have access to my Sys Admin manual until next week.
thanks,
eyc
