HELP: Our other Alpha is dead.

Dear all,

I have a dead Alpha 200/100. The console fails to find dka0,0,6,0 at boot
time. As this appears to be where the boot blocks live it fails to boot and
eventually drops out to the console. A 'show device' here does not even show
the device dka0.

I'm curerntly working on the theory that the disk drive is dead. We can
sometimes get it to boot by fiddling with the cables but so far it has:

1. Booted completely and then failed with a UBC write to the disk.
2. Got some way into booting and failed to find the disk half way through.

My questions are as follows:

1. Is my diagnosis of a dead disk correct? - How can I check?
2. If it is not a dead disk then what? Cables? Controller?
3. If it is a dead disk can I use any 3rd party SCSI disk? How can I set its
disklabel and get it to boot? Could I boot the dead machine across the network,
write the disklabel and then install the OS on the new disk? The articles in
the archive make it appear straightforward to add a new disk to a running
system, what about a dead one.
4. Having got the system working again do I have much hope of rescuing user data
from the dead disk or must I use the backup tape - yes I do have one!!

All help gratefully received.

John
