linking /tmp to /var/tmp

I have a relatively small /tmp area because it is a directory on the root
disk. I also have a large /var/tmp partition (well, not _really_ large,
but it is about 8x the size of the former) on a separate disk. While
most of our software is configured to use /var/tmp, some uses only /tmp
and it fills up my root partition, which I'm sure all of you know cause
all sorts of wonderful problems...

I would like to link /tmp to /var/tmp, but I don't know if this is
advisable and if it is okay, where in the bootup sequence to do it (i.e.
I don't want to link it when there are files in /tmp needed in the boot
sequence.

Does anybody do this sort of thing? If not, any better solutions out
there?

AdvTHANKSance,

Brad
