Well, i finally got through to DEC support which didn't know of any
previous problem reports with these messages. They offered an NFS patch,
for different symptoms, that incidentally appears (so far) to fix my
problems.

The Patch ID is:
=======
PROBLEM: (Patch ID: OSF350-020) (HPAQ72013)
System hang or system panic with "kernel memory fault" if an nfs server
is given corrupted data.
=======

Thanks to: brock_at_cs.unca.edu
who went from NFS V2 to NFS V3 to fix their occurence of this problem.
(who hopefully will now be able to get this, or the 3.2C equivalent
patch to fix it)
