Hi everyone;
  I got a swift reply from Anthony D'Atri <aad_at_nwnet.net>. Thanks!
  The problem is that rdist has to run with suid bit set. The workaround
is:
1) run it as root ( Setting up /.rhosts is always a bad idea, though)
or
2) suid rdist (who knows if there is a hidden bug in rdist ...)
or
3) get USC version of rdist (ftp.usc.edu/pub/rdist/). I am looking into
   this option.

  Thank you for your attention and help.
