First, thanks to the helpful people that responded to the original email
sent by me in my professor's name (Fu-Ming Tao).

>From the responses it seems there is a continuous struggle between UBC
and VM over memory. Adjusting ubc_maxpercent does not increase i/o
performance and in our case actually hurts it.

>From both the email responses and the book System Tuning and Performance,
the way to increase performance is to use disk striping or add physical
RAM. That is a bit of a bummer as we were hoping that the alpha would be
much faster than a power challenge we often use. The challenge, however,
has excellent i/o compared to the alpha...

I will continue to learn about dec unix and if/when I do find a way to
make this beast perform, I will post a summary again.

Thanks,
Rich McClellan
