dxmail customization? HELP!

I wouldn't normally send this here, because it's more of a personal
issue than a system management one. However, I tried posting to
comp.unix.osf.osf1, wherein the following sank without leaving a
trace...

Anyhow, could some kind soul please help?

Executive summary: How can I customize the appearance of the box
which presents mail folders in dxmail on DEC Unix 3.2C?

   Details:

I've been using dxmail since Ultrix 4.1, and while it's not perfect,
it's the best graphical mail tool I've used.

(Digression: xmh comes close, but it's missing a key feature -- I can't
figure out how to put a button into a stand-alone read window to read the
next message in the *same* window. As for exmh, when I tried it I was
underwhelmed by its lack of support for large folders -- some of my
folders have more than 3500 messages in them!)

Anyhow, since moving to OSF/1 3.2B, I've had no end of trouble getting
my folders to appear in the folder window without requiring horizontal
or vertical scrolling. With Ultrix dxmail this wasn't a problem, but
on DEC Unix the folder names are double spaced, as well as rendered in
a much larger font than necessary IMHO.

Apart from this drawback the new version is *much* nicer than the old,
with all sorts of interesting new features -- but I can't bring myself
to use it, because the perennial folder scrolling is driving me crazy.

Can anyone take pity on me and help me figure out how to get the
   presentation I want? Currently I'm using a binary-translated copy
of Ultrix 4.3 dxmail, which loads in *41* Mb of virtual memory(!)
   Help!

Thanks in advance,

     - Steven
