Sorry for late summary.
The problems with disk installations have disappeared after we changed
SCSI cable to standard thick DEC cable.
Thanks to all who gave me feeling that it was hardware problem.

It's a bad disk. Send it back.

hi
you have done makedev, presumably ?
i usually do disklabel -rw rz1 rather than
giving it the full /dev/rrzblah path;
have you tried that ? the error you
are getting doesn't sound like the
usual one you get when you disklabel rz1
and are told that the "pack is unlabelled".
good luck,
andy

the other thing to do is check

Use uerf to a listing of the error log. Use the "-o full" option
to get the full listing, since this is the only way to get expanded
SCSI errors. If there are SCSI errors that correspond to the write
errors, then something is wrong with the disk.

Hello,
No you ain't doing anything wrong. This is the standard procedure when installing a new disk, i.e.
to put a label on it. There is probably something wrong with the disk, you should either call the
technician back and don't let him out, until he has brought it up and running, or in the meantime
you could try to test the drive further, with the scu utility, e..g:
# scu -f /dev/rrz1c
scu> verify media
and you could try to format it:
scu> format defects all
scu> exit
Regards,
Helgi.

There is something wrong with the disk, with cables or with terminators.
Your procedure is correct.

Sure sounds like a hardware problem with the disk. Use the uerf utility to
see what errors are being logged:
# uerf -R -o full | more
will get all the errors, in reverse chronological error, with full details.
I suspect you're getting a write error that's due to a bad spot on the disk.

Eugene,
You might want to try:
# disklabel -z /dev/rrz1c
to zero out the disklabel and then do:
# disklabel -rw /dev/rrz1c RZxx
In order to write the label onto the physical disk (-r option), the
disk label section has to be made writable first. This is only done
through the -z and -e flags, which set a writable bit on the disk
itself. After writing out the primary label with -rw, you can do an
-re to edit the layout directly. I did this for a few of my disks
rather than trying to set up custom disktab entries.
