Setting up a mail distribution system

Dear all,
See what you can do with this one.

I am in a research group with about 18 researchers and I am a member of the
system management "team" - yes you guessed it, everyone is too busy.....

Anyway, I have established a simple mechanism for people mailing to each other
and also to the complete group by distributing an alias list to everyone. This
is clearly not very convenient as any changes require a new distribution.
Furthermore, some of the individuals use their mail address on Suns elsewhere on
the campus (they use elm) while others like myself use our own Digital machines
(with dxmail - don't laugh). As a result the alias files used by everyone have
different formats.

So here is what I want to do. I want to set up some mechanism on one of our
Alpha machines (running OSF/DU 3.2c) such that there is only one alias list
stored centrally and people mail to this address using the known aliases, and
this central address will forward the mail appropriately to the actual users -
some on our Digital network and others on Sun machines (over which we have no
control).

Does anyone know of how I can set this up? I have heard mention of something
called majordomo - does it do something like that, and if so where can I get a
hold of it?

Any help would be appreciated. Right, now back to my "real" job.......

Regards,
Graeme
