Upgrade showstopper...

Hello all,

I have been trying to come up with ideas to solve a BIG problem, and I
need some help on this one...

We are upgrading one of our alpha boxes from Open VMS to DU this summer.
(doesn't sound like a problem yet right!)

Here is the problem. Our domain "_at_msoe.edu" points to our VMS box that we
are upgrading to DU this summer. The users on the VMS and our PC network
both have 12 character usernames, DU is out in the cold with only 8 characters.

Whats the problem? All of our mail will break after the upgrade. Many
usernames will be invalid--This is a BIG problem.

I do not have the option of changing everything to 8 character usernames.

THE OVERALL PROBLEM:

12 character usernames entering the mail system on DU.
This mail has to not break and still get to where the user checks mail.

Our network will consist of 3 systems after the upgrade.

1 PC network server
1 Alpha box with user accounts and programs
1 Alpha box dedicated to WWW, FTP and Mail routing. (This was the VMS box)

All internet mail will go to the mail routing box and then needs to get
where the user wants to read mail, the 8 character username alpha box or
12 character PC net.

Unless I set up some sort of dynamic aliasing I don't know how to fix this
problem other than point "_at_msoe.edu" to the PC network and forward mail
from there. Though this solution would kill the PC server...

HELP!

Thanks for any help in advance...
