Hi,
I have two questions concerning the our OSF/1 3.2b system.
I run an Alphaserver 2100 with 128MB ram and an 8GB storage
works raid array(raid 5).
This server exports home directories to 27 sgi clients, and a couple of
suns, as well as being a very active general purpose unix box for the university.
NFS version 2 is used as NFS 3 between sgi-dec machines is asking for trouble.
I have installed all the sgi recommended patches(including 1102)
On a number of occassions now a file has been truncated on a write from the
sgi clients to the server.
Once (and this is a case for the X-files team) a file was written from a Mac
to a Sun running CAP. The write was reported to have failed (wrong permissions),
but was append to another users file. This other user did not even have an
account on the Sun. The only thing that they had in common was that their home
directories both resided on the Alpha. I am not making this up.
NFS performance (and performance in general) is very poor. The alpha was an
upgrad from an old sparc 2 but many users feel its been a down grade!!
I get lots of Stale file handle errors( errno 22) on the server.
The file system gets very dirty(UFS not Advfs).
I have tried turning NFS locking off, it made no difference.
I have tried tuning the vm subsystem (adjusting the ubc_maxperent etc)
as recommended by this list, and this has improved things somewhat, but its
too early to tell (I still get the stale file handles) if its the long term
solution.
Under peak load the network crawwwwwlsss
I get lots of collisions on the clients (but few errors) ie %30-%60
Question 1:
Are the file system problems likely to be a bad Network(as I suspect),
NFS itself, or at a lower level such as the raid array
Question 2:
On booting, the server mounts a src directory from an sgi box,
recently this has failed with "/sbin/mount_ufs :No such file
or directory"
Sure enough its not there, and I can't find it on the 3.2b cd's
either.
Where can I find it?
Any help would be appreciated,
TIA
boc
