rptys !!

Hi all,

*arrggh!*

Alphaserver 2100, DU 3.2D-1.

Our userload often gets to 255 users and we get the beloved
"telnetd: all network ports in use" message. So, in the past I
have been able to create more ptys, and set rpty nnn in the
kernel config file. Now I can't. The release notes for 3.2C
indicate that it's been replaced by an option : option RPTY
which creates a rpty.h which defines RPTY_DYNAMIC 0 in it.
Now, I am assuming those bright sparks at Digital have decided
to make the allocation of available rptys dynamic according
to values of maxusers (1024 here) and other such stuff like
memory etc. I have tried everything I can think of to increase
the number the kernel will allow, but it sticks at 255 and that's
it. (Yes, I've done MAKEDEV PTY_# for all the billions of ptys that
are created, even the groovy ones with the capitol letters). Is
this a feature of Digital's making and if so how can I correct it?
We used to get >300 users on our box before this change was brought
in and it's annoyed me for too long....
