we are running apache 1.0.5 on a dec 255 4/266 with 64 megs of ram. we
have about 860 megs for a dedicated swap disk and are running in
immediate mode (/sbin/swapdefault). The apache server runs fine with 150
process for a while then apparently, the system just grinds to a halt and
the swap disk activity goes crazy. Swap usage during normal operation
(that is when the apache server responds normally) is about 6%. We have
860 megs swap only because we dedicated a whole disk as the swap disk.
The server is taking about 814000 hits/day.
Any suggestions about how to avoid the sudden choice to start swapping
like crazy would be appreciated. Or other performance hints for this
type of server.
- Thank you!
