My original problem was that, after installing a new Turbochannel dual scsi
controller (PMAZC-AA) onto a DEC 3000, I could not access any devices mounted
on it after booting the existing kernel. I could, however, see the devices
at the console prompt (>>> t tcXX cnfg) and I was using the correct device
special filenames (to those who caught it: there were a couple of typos in my
original post - sorry!).
The explanation is that my existing kernel did not include support for the
new turbochannel card. The solution, as suggested by most respondents, was to
shutdown the machine, boot the generic kernel (>>> boot -fi "/genvmunix") and
then run doconfig to build a new kernel. After doing so, the resulting
kernel included support for the new turbochannel device. Subsequent MAKEDEV's
created the necessary device special files.
