NIS slave server won't boot if Master server is down

This is the configuration :

A NIS master server
A NIS slave server

The NIS master was down, due to HW problems.

Because of a software installation on the NIS slave server, we had to
reboot it. It hung in the boot process in the YP launch process. I tried
twice same result.

The machines are too busy, so I can't make anymore tests on them to
diagnose this behavior.

Is that behavior normal ?

Are there any means to work around ?

Cheers
