Unlocking pty's (or clearing?)

     Hi --
     
     We have a problem with an Alpha 2100 running DU v3.2c -- the problem
     is that one of the memory banks are bad -- but other than that, the
     system boots up fine in single user mode.
     
     In multi-user mode, the system hangs when it gets to "Unlocking ptys"
     and just sits there without doing anything else. This message comes
     after "Clearing tmp" and I've tried to figure out what the problem may
     be.
     
     I'd like to get the machine running until we can get the memory board
     replaced.
