After exprimenting with xmodmap, I found a DEC supplied utility
dxkeycaps. This should allow (see man page) :

     - to DUPLICATE keys (MB3 on Control, Duplicate, then click on
       Compose)

     - to ALTER the behaviour of some keys
Apparently the Compose key once remapped with a manual xmodmap
or with the above operations has an autorepeat feature which
can be disabled (MB3 on remapped Compose, Edit and remove
       autorepeat)

     - to Save EITHER the difference with previous, or the entire
mapping in an xmodmap file. It appears that the entire mapping
is always saved, anyhow that works fine with "xmodmap ~/.dxkeycaps"
       in .cshrc
