Question: how to create long names in e-mail addresses

Hello,

     I would like to create long names for users in their e-mail addresses.
     An example:
            jimi.hendrix_at_guitar.play.com
            ^^^^^^^^^^^^
     Is it necessary to do login names with more than 8 characteres? If the
answer is "yes", how can I do it?
