My original problem was

The problem is that the version of Digital Unix I am using (3.2x) is too old
to automatically add the new disk information, even though the disk
functions normally.
To rectify this you need to rebuild the kernal by doing:
boot genvmunix
and build a new kernel with doconfig -c MYMACHINE
The new kernel will then recognize the new device.
