The answer was:

1. Yes, I did have to set my os_type to "NT" to upgrade my firmware.
2. Jennifer mentioned that I needed a graphics console for ARC, and I
    did have one.
3. Bert mentioned that on the AS 600/300, he could get into arc at the
    the >>> prompt with the arc command.
    However, for the AS 255, the method of running the SWXCRMGR.EXE was
    provided by Tom Webster:
