My original question was:

>Has anyone out there gone through a conversion of an Oracle server from
>VMS to DU 4.0x. I'm am in the planning stages for one in June and would
>like to know if there are any major gotcha's or tips to make the process

Mr. Barnwell replied:

Hope you got a spare computer.

     and

We are doing a conversion using Oracle-RDB (once dec-rdb) to oracle7.3
on DU4.0

overall experience was should have stayed with VMS

Jim replied:

We went through a similar process in late 1995. It was our financial
system and the only problems we had were mainly with data in the
database that was VMS specific (usernames comes to mind). Beyond that it
was basically and export/ftp/import process and it worked well. It'll be
a damn sight faster too!

The other fiddly bit that comes to mind is printers.

We are planning to use a spare Alpha 1000a connected to an HSZ50 with 144GB
of disk. After conversion and testing of the database, we will move the
disk array over to the 8400, change IP address and name, do some tuning and
hopefully be up and running.

If anyone has a suggestion or comment, please let me know. I need to learn
more about raw devices Vs advfs.

Thanks again, this is a great list...
