We perform a nightly tar archive which is written to a named pipe on
which we are running compress, resulting in a compressed tar file on
disk. Whilst the compression rate is generally consistent, now and
again this produces either a much larger (eg. 1.5 x)or much smaller (eg.
0.5 x) compressed file than expected. There is very little change in
the input data and 0 return codes from both the compress and the tar.
Has anybody experienced similar behaviour (ie. highly variable rates of
compression on the same or similar data) or have any suggested
explanations for this behaviour?
