Hi DU Admins
I got so many responses to my first summary that I'm posting
a second. This might help someone else in the future if they
search the archives.
The most popular suggested solution for backing up an NFS mounted
directory was to use vdump/vrestore. Although these are intended
for use with ADVFS filesets they also work with UFS filesets.
My only worry about this was whether it would then be possible
to restore the root partition from within the Standalone
Environment (or the Unix Shell under DU 4.0x) when you boot off
the CD.
Dr.Tom Blinn assures me that vrestore is included on the CD so
there's no problem.
Another suggestion from Mike Crowley was:
> The machine doing the dumping can mount the disk of the machine with
> the tape drive. That computer could then do:
> dump 0uf /nfsmounted/dump0.usr /usr
>
> The system with the tape drive could then do:
> dd if=$DFile of=$nTapeDev obs=10k 2>> $Logfile_tmp >> $Logfile_tmp

I'm sure this would work if you've got a disk with enough free
space but unfortunatedly we don't.
Thanks to alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com, James Sainsbury, Drake Callahan,
Michael A. Crowley, Bill David, Marcel Bernards, Knut Hellebų,
Rainer Landes, and Dr. Tom Blinn for their help.
Cheers
Ian
