SUMM: Configuring and HP printer with DU

Hi,

Many replies, most replies telling me that this matter was treated a
couple of weeks ago. I should have checked the archives. Anyway, I wanted
to make sure that the way I set the printer (with /etc/hosts) was OK.

The answer is to put "rp=raw:\" (for PS output) or "rp=text:\" (for text)
in the /etc/printcap file. If the printer will be used for text AND for
PostScript, you have to create 2 printer queues and educate your users
(which is not easy sometimes, I prefer dogs and cats, thery're easier to
educate :-)

If you use the jetadmin software (available only for SunOS and HP/UX) you
can have only one queue and that software handles the jobs. But I read a
LOT of critics about the JetAdmin package, it is flaky...

The lpr emulation of the JetDirect card is flaky also it seems. It looks
like it cannot take more than one job at a time ! If you submit a job
during the printing of a previous job, you loose both ! A lot of people
complained about this behavior, I did not have the time to verify it.
People suggested to use a banner, it mysteriously solves a lot of problem
with the 5Si, even if it is a waste of paper...

For the landscape printing, etc... you need print filters, and the filters
cannot be used for a remote printer, so you're stuck. Some people told me
that there was a discussion about a solution to this problem under DU.
You'll have to look into the archives.

Thanks to the many people who replied and have a nice day

Original Post:

Hello,

We recently bought a new HP Fast Printer (HP 5si) and hooked it up on our
LAN. It has a JetDirect Card in it.

I have problems configuring the printer. Most of our other printers are on
a NetWare LAN and we access them from unix via a NetWare NFS Server. We had
no problems configuring those other printer as remote (rm) and specifying
the NetWare queue name in (rp) in /etc/printcap with the lprsetup utility.

But this new printer should not be made available to the netware clients,
we only want it to be accessible from one UNIX box. It has this JetDirect
card that have an IP address of a.x.y.z, so what we did was put en entry in
/etc/hosts that looks like:

HP5SI a.x.y.z

And with lprsetup, we said the printer was remote and that its hostname was
HP5SI and that the remote printer name is "" (nothing).

We can check the status of the printer with lpq, it tells us that it is a
JetDirect printer. We can also print to the printer, but we have the
following problem:

When printing LF terminated files, the printer just prints garbage because
it is a PC printer and it expects CR/LF at the end of the lines....

I have a couple of questions regarding this printer and printing in general:

a) Did we set that printer in the correct way ? If not, how should it be
set up ?
b) How do I arrange for the printer to understand UNIX LF terminated text
output ?
c) How does someone create special queues for which the page orientation is
landscape, full duplex... and so on ?
