sleeping console never wakes up

I've got a AlphaServer 2100A (DU 3.2D-1) with a rarely used graphics
console that has been behaving wierdly. When not being used (i.e. just
displaying the Digital login screen) the monitor will, after some period of
time, enter energy-saver mode and go blank/black. Occassionally (not
always), it becomes impossible to awake the monitor from this sleep mode.
No amount of keyboard bashing or mouse clicking gets the monitor to come
out of its deep sleep! All other remotely connected users can continue to
work normally. I've rlogin'ed and it looks like, compared with another
functioning AS1000A, all the necessary graphics processes are running
(dxsession, X, -local:0 (xdm), etc.). In fact, it is even possible when the
machine is in this state, through blind typing, to log in normally on the
console (as confirmed again via an rlogin). But the monitor still remains
in energy-saver mode. We resort to rebooting to get the use of the monitor
back again.

It seems like somehow the monitor is not getting a video signal. I doubt it
is the monitor or cable since a reboot always resolves the problem. I would
have merely assumed I was going nuts, but then a friend mentioned the same
thing happens with his Digital machine (also 3.2, I think). Does anyone
else have this problem? A known bug? Maybe I am going crazy?

Thanks for the help,
