Thanks for the quick responses. The solution was to rebuild the kernel,
with the old video controller commented out.

how do the lines for the graphic adapters in your kernel
config file look like ? the fb device is the onboard adapter ...

controller fb? at tc0 slot 8 vector fbint


what happens if you remove/comment this line, rebuild the kernel
and reboot ...
