nfs on 3.2c vs 4.0a

Gurus,

  Setup: One DU 3.2c NFS server, and numerous DU 4.0A/B clients. Using NIS,
         and /tcb is mounted on all of the clients from the server.

  Problem(s):

    1. Updates can sometimes take up to several minutes to reach clients,
       even when the server is _very_ lightly loaded.

    2. (Possibly related to 1?) Every time we reboot the server, users
       experience horrendous delays in logging in (up to a 20 minute "hang"
       after entering their password). After the server has been running
       for a day or so, the delay disappears.

  We've already run some tests and determined that the server has no network
  performance problems, and that there are a sufficient number of nfs daemons
  running.

  Is there some nifty incompatibility between the NFS implementations for
  3.2c and 4.0a/b?

  Any ideas on where to look?

  TIA, and I will gladly summarize.
