(original question is at the bottom of this summary)

Thanks very much for the really, really fast response(s).

To wrap things up, here's a few bits of info people said that are very
helpful:

(1)

From: Allan.SIMEONE_at_rp-rorer.com
check on the freeware alpha Cd that came with the system. It is on
there under the
bin directory called tcsh.

(2)

Juha Suhonen <juhas_at_juhas.iki.fi>
I have compiled tcsh on both Digital Unix 4.0 and OSF/1 3.2g. On both
platforms it's my default shell, and on Digital Unix 4 it's also the
default for normal users. No complaints so far.

(3)

...a bunch of people like it, but prefer to use bash

(4)

Sanwald, Paul C" <pcs75657_at_glaxowellcome.com
I am currently running tcsh 6.04 on a Dec alpha running osf 4 and
it runs fine. if I remember correctly it compiled rather easily

(5)

From: Stephen LaBelle <labelles_at_mscd.edu>
Remember to add any new shells to the file /etc/shells

(6)

From: PRE Site Manager <star_at_uclan.ac.uk>
it's fine. we use it all the time with no ill effects.
should be able to get it from the list of free software:
