right on.... the key was to compile a new kernel without debugging.
gdb and ddd both work great now... thanks very much to Mike Epstein and

had a problem with debugging when I first used our 5.0b system.
The initial fix was to disable kernel debugging in the system
configuration and
rebuild. That fixed the crashing. There is language in the most recent
bulk
patch (duv40bas00004-19970609.tar) that this problem is fixed by the
patch, but
I haven't tried to verify it. I wasn't at all sure I cared whether
kernel
debugging was enabled!
believe the key is to cmpile a new kernel without kernel debugging.
gdb seems to crash an alpha with kernel debugging on.
