Hi Managers,
we just upgraded our Alphaserver 1000 from 3.2d to 4.0b,
plus the August jumbo patch kit.
One of it's many functions is as a print server, which
was working fine before the upgrade.
Now, printing works perfectly, when working
locally on the server but when we try to print from
any of the workstation clients ( a mixture of 3.2d and
4.0b, without the patch), an lpq command on the client reports
the following:
<client>: Mon Aug 18 10:34:46 1997: waiting for <server> to come up
Rank Pri Owner Job Files Total Size
1st 0 keshavje 310 escher.ps 10520 bytes
Despite restarting the queue and lpd on both the client and server,
the job never gets through to the server. A netstat -a on the
server reports:
Active Internet connections (including servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address (state)
tcp 0 0 server.printer client.1022 TIME_WAIT
tcp 0 0 *.printer *.* LISTEN
Where client and server are specific machines.
So it looks like the client is trying to establish a connection to
the lpd on the server but I an unsure what the TIME_WAIT state implies.
I have tried replacing the lpd on the server with the old ver 3.2d binary
but this doesn't seem to change anything.
Last october, Don Bovee posted a similar question to this list, but
there seemed to be no follow ups or summary that I could find.
http://www.ornl.gov/its/archives/mailing-lists/alpha-osf-managers/1996/10/msg00380.html
for that message.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Karim.
