First, let me thank averybody who quickly responded.

The answer is NO. The built-in VGA chip in the AlphaServer 1000 is VERY
SLOW and cannot do more than 640x480 with the current driver.

Most of you suggested that we buy a High Performance PCI graphics adapter
and disable the built-in VGA adapter with ECU prior to installing the new
PCI board. While the adapter is disabled, do not forget to set
console=serial at the SRM prompt before booting the machine !

An alternative is to use a serial console and an X workstation or emulator
to do some X stuff with the server.
