Recovering from LSM disk failure - reinstallation???

Greetings, alpha folks. I'm trying to draw up some instructions for what
to do in the event of disk failure on our DU 4.0b alpha with LSM, where
rootdg contains /, swap, and /usr, all mirrored, and where "/" is mounted
as a UFS filesystem whereas /usr is an Advfs filesystem.

The LSM documentation (available on the web, bless DEC's generousity)
talks a lot about "reinstalling" the system in the event of a complete
failure of some kind where all copies of the rootvol are corrupt.
Why am I doing backups if I have to "reinstall"???? Do they really mean
that? Is it not possible to restore???

Thanks for any enlightenment you can throw on this murky area. Has anyone
out there gone thru a failure, and care to share some of the recovery
details??? I'll summarize whatever I get.

Huge TIA!
