Thanks to all who responded to my question on recovering
the root filesystem from a tar backup.
Now the problems (known ones) seem to be fixed, except one
which I mention at the end of this message.
I did the following steps:
* I read the tape tar once more, this time with the "p" option (!!!),
so that rights and ownerships should be preserved.
(credits to Andre Delafontaine)
* I rebooted using genvmunix (>>> boot -file genvmunix),
rebuilt the kernel (doconfig) and booted the new kernel.
(credits to Paul Kitwin)
* I manually fixed the rights of /dev/null, /dev/zero
(which I don't understand, since the rights should already be OK
now, like they are for many other device files).
This helped.
The remaining problem is that ftp (when started from the "faulty"
machine) does not ask for a password and directly says "Login failed".
This is probably again a rights/ownership problem, since for a
superuser it works OK. Perhaps any further hints ?
(BTW: this is DU 4.0B)
Thanks again !
Marcin
