Thanks to all who responded. I did a kill -HUP <xdm process id> and I got
back the X login at the console. Apparently as some have pointed out, it
got swapped out and killed.
The next problem after this was that I couldn't login as root at the
console. I get the message "Not authorized for terminal access - See
Administrator". I searched the archives and found the solution was by
deleting /dev/:0. I really don't know what this actually does, but it
solved the problem. :-)
