Sendmail error: Hostname not recognized as local

I just recently upgraded to DU 4.0c and my sendmail was working correctly
previously. But now whenever I try to send outbound mail, I get
the error message that looks like this:

>>> HELO strange.phy.albany.edu
<<< 553 Local configuration error, hostname not recognized as local
554 jjo_at_mail.lns.cornell.edu... Service unavailable


This is my own smtp server that is feeding this back to me. I can
still receive E-mail just fine.

Any help with this is appreciated.
