FDDI switching

Hi Folks,

This is not exactly Alpha specific.

We have a FDDI network consisting of some Alphas and other system using
a DEC Hub one as the network concentrator. We need to add more nodes to
this network, which now has 6 nodes, and used up all the ports on the
DEC Hub. We also note that the traffic is getting pretty high, that we
may expect major contention as we add more nodes to this net. So I was
considering getting a FDDI switch to replace the DEC Hub. However, the
only offering from DEC, the awesome GIGASwitch, is kind of overkill; it
has much more capacity than we will need (for now and the near future),
and it costs more than we can justify spending. Is there a smaller
version that offers something like 8 or 16 ports and won't take up half a
rack? If not from DEC, is there another company that offers this?

We have considered other alternatives such as 100BT Ethernet or HPPI,
but they cost a lot more (require new I/F cards for all the hosts) and
the old TC Alpha systems can not support them.

thanks in advance for any suggestions.
