Media Robot Utility - Nothing but errors

Got this spiffy looking TL810 tape silo:

# file /dev/mc8
/dev/mc8:
  character special (51/16384) SCSI #1 TL810 special_device #64 (SCSI ID #0)

that doesn't seem to want to do anything, for example:

# robot show robot
ROBOT /dev/mc8 is not responding: Robot not ready. SENSE KEY: 0, ASC: 4, ASCQ: 2

FWIW:

# uname -a
OSF1 scythe.iastate.edu V3.2 62 alpha
# sizer -c
cpu "DEC1000"


Any help would be appreciated.
