strange crashes on dec300 m400 running du4.0b

hi,

i've been getting constant crashes on my dec300-m400 box running
du4.0b; the machine will be running with no problems, and then suddenly
start the boot sequence. it's as if someone took out the power plug;
the messages on the console are of the type:

SMTP Mail Service started

83 BOOT SYS
INIT-S-CPU...
INIT-S-RESET_TC...
INIT-S-ASIC...
INIT-S-MEM...
INIT-S-NVR...

(etc)

and this one, after being up for 8 minutes (the login: prompt was there
for 8 minutes):

Academic Computing Facility welcomes you to IS4

login:
83 BOOT SYS
INIT-S-CPU...
INIT-S-RESET_TC...
INIT-S-ASIC...
INIT-S-MEM...
INIT-S-NVR...
INIT-S-SCC...
INIT-S-NI...
INIT-S-SCSI...

the crashes are occuring about every 15 minutes nowl; at first, the machine
would stay up for several hours. it has been running du4.0b for ~3 months,
and no kernel mods have been made. i'm running the same version (patchlevel
4) on many other alphas including two other dec3000-m400s, with no problem.

we've swapped out *everything* - at this point, the only original piece
of hardware are the two internal disk drives, which were moved to another
dec3000. digital is bringing in two disk drives tomorrow. at this point,
it's either something wrong with the physical disk drive(s) [i've run "scu"s
"verify media" on all the drives, with no errors found], or the kernel, which
i've built again on the problematic system, and other systems running du4.0b.
the last 12 crashes have been right after the "SMTP Mail Service started"
message, which is right before the

Network Time Service started

message. has anyone seen this type of behavior before?

                                        thanks,

                                        gary
