Almost everyone that responded suggested using "screen" which is available from
ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/screen-3.7.4.tar.gz
I have read the man pages and seems like just what I was looking for, I
haven't been able to get it to work due to a No more PTY's message, but
that's another story.
