video-related crashes in 4.0[AB]

I've seen several instances now where Digital UNIX 4.0A and 4.0B will
crash, all of which seem to be triggered by pixmap drawing in X. I
first noticed when trying to scroll a particular web page containing a
background using Netscape, and recently also experienced a crash while
looking at the various desktop patterns in the CDE style manager. The
crashes lock the machine up _hard_, frequently disabling console access
and the front-panel button and requiring a power cycle to bring the
machine back. I can send crash data output to people interested in more
details.

If anyone has experienced this, is there a way to fix it? Does this
involve installing the Open3D software and its video drivers? Is there
someone I can complain to at DEC to encourage them to include the right
drivers in the next DUNIX release? (I have also noticed a cosmetic, but
apparently non-fatal, problem with stuff under menu pop-ups getting
slightly garbled.)
