PowerStorm Adapter Problem

We have a pair of AlphaStations with the PowerStorm 3D10 and 4D20 video
adapters. Both are running Digital Unix V3.2D-1 (Rev. 41). About once every
other month both experience horizontal smearing of the video display which
renders the display unreadable. Once this occurs the screen remains unusable.
The only solution we have found is to shutdown, cycle power and reboot.

Have others experienced this? Someone from DEC Field Service said that this
was a result of defective components from a supplier. I'm skeptical as I have
already had the 4D20 replaced to no avail. Can anyone confirm that this is
indeed a hardware problem? And is there a workaround to temporarily correct
the problem other than shutdown and reboot?

Thanks,
