The original problem was:

What had occurred was not a corruption of the ttys db after all.
Instead the password file turned out to be the culprit. It had been
overwritten to a zero length file by user bin, group bin. After
restoring the password file from backup tape we were operational
again.
Although the problem has been solved, I am still interested to hear
if others have had any similar experiences involving the password
file and DU 4.0. If so, please contact me.
Thanks to all for their advice!
