Hello alpha-managers!

I have trouble installing the packets latex2html and perl5.
I didn't find anything usefull for the later or anything
at all concerning latex2html.

1) Latex2html
-------------

I got the sources for LaTeX2HTML Version 96.1 and installed
everything quite like instructed.

The test-run on the example gives me the following error though:

  andreasb_at_oekoalpha /usr/local/lib/latex2html/example> make
  latex2html -show_section_numbers -dir report -external_file report -contents node1.html -index node3.html -prefi
x s2 -up_url sec1.html -up_title "Section 1 title" sec2.tex
This is LaTeX2HTML Version 96.1 (Feb 5, 1996) by Nikos Drakos,
Computer Based Learning Unit, University of Leeds.

  OPENING /home/porthos6/usrlocal/local/lib/latex2html/example/sec2.tex
Cannot create directory report: File exists
  Reusing directory report:
No dbm on this machine at /usr/local/bin/latex2html line 503.
  *** Exit 2
  Stop.

I traced the script and found out that the error is indeed produced
(or invoked) by perl5 and not the latex2html script itself. So maybe
only my perl5-installation doesn't work properly ... ?

2) perl 5.003
-------------

The above error lead me to perl (maybe it just doesn't find the dbm
libaries ?) and some cgi-scripts won't run anymore since we upgraded
to perl5.

The compile went rather smoothly (i thought), but while running
'sh configure' I got the following:

[much stuff snipped]
What is the file extension used for shared libraries? [so]

  Checking for optional libraries...

Some versions of Unix support shared libraries, which make executables smaller
but make load time slightly longer.

ould there be the problem? Or has anybody a 'configure.h' file
ready for a DEC Alpha running DU 3.2 ?

Any help greatly appreciated - I will summerize every response!
