I found the following to be a useful solution:
mminfo -m provides the names as well as other useful information about
the tape volumes still listed in the online NSR file indexes.
To get specific information regarding whether a tape can be recycled, use
mminfo -a -r 'state' <volume name> .
Std. out of an "E", "M" or "X" corresponding to recyclable, manually
recycleable or both, respectively, indicates that the tape volume can be
over-written.
