My question was about this warning message seen at powerup on our
PW 500au and 433au series workstations.
Thanks to Peter Stern, Graham Allan for their replies and to
Richard Bemrose for supplying all the information he had on this
problem.
The solution for us came from Nick Sayer of Digital Support in
Brisbane who advised me to upgrade to firmware version 5.2. I
downloaded the firmware from Digital's site, installed it from
a floppy and the error message is gone.
Whether this really fixes anything or just eliminates the warning
message remains to be seen.

More details of the replies and other information I was able
to gather:
Opinions differ on whether this is a real problem or not
and the suggested possible solutions range over:
upgrading the firmware
replacing the motherboard
replacing a disk
replacing the Bcache module
installing a Bcache module if there is none installed
Some of our workstations have Bcache and some don't, and adding a
Bcache module to one didn't eliminate the message so I didn't believe
the cache was relevant.
Some have one disk and some two and the disk models are different so
I doubted the disks had anything to do with it.
Replacing the motherboard seemed like a last resort so I tried
the firmware upgrade and it worked.
