Thanks to Nathan and Alan for your help. The possibility of a hardware
problem was raised. As a result, I started looking at the tape drive,
itself. I quickly discovered an unlabeled black square button on the back
panel of the tape drive. I pushed that button and the display on the front
of the tape drive indicated that the density changed. I tried labeling a
blank tape and mounting it and it worked fine. As soon as the tape mount
occurred, NSR began chugging away at its backup task. Things look good
now, but now, I have to figure out who pressed that damned button!
