9G UltraWide in BA-356-KG ?

Hi,

I've got 8 blue SBB ultrawide 9.1G disks installed in a BA356 chassis,
running in `fast wide' mode. (it's a long story as to why DEC sold
me Ultra disks and a non Ultra chassis/personality module/cables, so
nevermind). the 356 runs in split bus mode, connected to channels 0 and
1 of a KZ-PAC RAID5 controller in an AS800. it's RAID5, with
6 disks, the 7th being configured for failover. this all works.

I recently purchased a BA356-KG, along with 2 BN37A-E cables.

If i move the disks into the new pedestal and connect it up, nothing
works. The system seems to spin the disks up, but then waits with
"waiting for dra13 to poll" until it gives up and marks all the disks
bad. booting from alphabios into the controller doesn't see any disks
other than as failed, and it can't access them to do anything other
than leave them as failed. trying to mark them optimal results in a
message saying "there are no disks on this bus"

If i put the disks back into the original chassis and mark them as
optimal, the whole thing works again.

Any ideas on why these disks can't simply be transported across and
work ? I've read through the controller/SBB/BA356 manual and can't
find anything that would indicate this doesn't work.

Even more worrying is that it implies this config won't work at all
which is bizarre.

Ideas/pointers appreciated. I'll summarise back to the list.
