I have been running Helios Ethershare 2.2 on a DEC UNIX 3.2g machine for
the last two years. It workED great. This server melted-down last week. I
used this as an opportunity (?) to upgrade to DEC UNIX 4.0a (the latest
that my vendor supports).
As part of the Ethershare SW install, the install script does a kernel
rebuild. It looks like the script completes successfully, and the kernel
rebuild gets done.
- BUT - When I reboot to the new kernel, the CPU panics and drops back to
the monitor prompt >>> . The only way back into the machine is "boot -flags
s -file genvmunix" to get into the single user mode.
Once I am in the single user mode, I do a "doconfig" and select the new
config to base the new kernel on. This new kernel DOES boot Okay, and the
machine comes up happy,
- BUT - When I try to run the Ethershare (start-atalk), most of the
processes die as soon as they start. There are no error messages on the
console. If you do a "ps -aef | grep srv" there is only the desksrv process
running.
Is there anyone out there running Ethershare 2.2 (not 2.5) on a DEC UNIX
4.0a setup?
If so, did you have to do anything "special" to get it to work?
I have not called Helios yet, I have a feeling their answer is going to
be "Get version 2.5, then we will talk". The upgrade is $2500, and I
suppose I will need to get it soon, but I would like to get this running
ASAP (if possible).
