Original question:

We are have received AlphaServer 4100 with DU 4.0D installed, but due
to 3rd party application must install DU 3.2G. We installed DU 3.2G
successfully, but when it booted, the GUI login screen does not
display the logname & password prompts & the mouse appears dead. The
light on the system disk shows that it is being accessed repeatedly.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

=======================================================

Many of the responses were close & gave ideas for determining what
the problem was, but Rodrigo Poblete provided the exact correct
answer.

>You need to apply the patch for DU32g....

>the procedure is
>Install DU3.2g
>boot to single user
>apply latest patch kit available...
>it has some correction for the S3trio 64+ video card.
>And the boot to multi user.....

The S3 Trio64V+ graphics card is not supported in DU 3.2G as shipped.

I applied Patch Kit #4 for DU 3.2G.

Patch 218.00 OSF375X-005 corrected the problem.

The following is in Table 6-2: Summary of patches in Patch Kit-0004
for Patch 218.00:

>On systems with an S3 Trio64V+ graphics card (PB2GA-JC or PB2GA-JD),
>the X server hangs while drawing the login screen.

This was exactly what was happening to me.

Again...Thanks for all the responses.
